Originally known as lawn tennis, professional tennis has come a long way being the favorite leisure pastime in the late 1800s in England. Since 1905, four prestigious tennis events were held, the U.S. Open, Wimbledon Championships, the French Open and the Australian Open. Dubbed as the "Grand Slam", these events were the place where professional tennis players like American Vinnie Richards and the Frenchwoman Suzanne Lenglen are seen.

By 1968, tennis competitions have become "open" to anyone with the skills to compete in the championships. With such a change, players like Arthur Ashe, who won the first U.S. Open, but has been consistently denied entrance in earlier tennis clubs, and average tennis players has the chance to play it against the big-timers.

Over the years, the men dominated the tennis scene with superstars like Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Recently, women's tennis has become more popular than ever, producing outstanding players like Serena Williams, Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova. However, men's tennis continues to bring to light dominant men tennis players like Andy Roddick, Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt.

The Grand Slam tournaments remain the most prestigious among all tennis competitions out there today, but exciting matches are also featured in the tennis Masters series, the International series and the Challenger series.
