The Oakland Raiders was founded in 1960 as one of the original AFL teams, playing in the Western Division until 1969. The Raiders then became a part of the AFC West Division when the AFL and NFL merged in 1970. When Al David stepped in to be the Raiders’ head coach in 1963, the team became one of the best franchises in the league, posting 19 winning seasons in 20 years and winning 12 Division titles, the AFL Championship in 1967, AFC Championships in 1976, 1980 & 1983 and Super Bowl titles for XI, XV and XVII. To date, the Oakland Raiders is the only team from AFL or NFL who has played in the Super Bowl since the 1960s to 1980s.

David’s 30-year coaching helped the team with a 285-146-11 record, ranking the best among all pro football teams. Through David’s guidance and his successful “commitment to excellence”, the Oakland Raiders have developed outstanding football stars like Jim Otto, Willie Brown, George Blanda, Art Shell, Gene Upshaw, Mike Haynes, Dave Casper, Ten Hendricks, Howie Long, Marcus Allen and Fred Biletnikoff, all of which have been inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In the last five years, the Oakland Raiders have suffered consecutive season losses. This season, the Raiders are finding its way back to being a great contender in the league as new starting quarterback JaMarcus Russel might save the team another huge loss.
