American football originated in England around mid-19th century. The game became popular by students from an England school named, Rugby School, hence the name 'Rugby Football'. Since then, football became a well-known sport in Canada and was brought to America. Although the earlier versions of the game followed rugby-style rules, the game has evolved by 1874 when two colleges, Harvard University and McGill University met in Cambridge for a game. Since McGill followed rugby-style rules, while Harvard followed its own rules that allowed a more flexible ball handling than soccer, the teams compromised and Harvard had to use rugby-style rules.

It was only until 1875 when Harvard and Tufts University played at the Jarvis Field that the intercollegiate football became the game we know today. The origins of American Football can be seen in pictures of this memorable 1875 game where Tufts won 1-0, which hangs at the College Football Hall of Fame until this day. Since then, rivalries between colleges became a norm, with Harvard and Yale or Lafayette and Lehigh desperately aiming to be top of the league.

With the help of Walter Camp, who is dubbed the "Father of American Football", college football changed into its own unique sport by changing many of the rules and popularizing the game. As college football entered mainstream, its popularity, as well as the violence involved in games, increased dramatically. After a chain of injuries and deaths by the early 20th century and President Roosevelt's threat to ban the sport, the National Collegiate Athletic Association was formed, governing the sport and reducing injuries to the league.

Today, even with the NFL's popularity at its peak, college football games remain a much-awaited event as star players emerge from all parts of the country.
