New NFL Season Underway

The 2009 NFL season has kicked off. Between the teams, the fans, and the sports commentators/critics, it’s
hard to tell who is the most excited about it. One thing is for sure though, everyone is watching. Since February, there have been predictions, assumptions, and anticipation, and finally Football Sundays are back. With the tough competition we’ve seen so far, it’s no wonder why more coaches are going for it on 4th down, bringing games down to the wire. Here are some details about the past, to get you energized for this season and also some suggestions for getting others on board.

Historical Details

Olde Time FootballRumor has it that professional football in America started back in 1892 when William “Pudge” Heffelfinger was offered $500 to play in a game for Pittsburgh’s Allegheny Athletic Association against its rival Pittsburgh Athletic Club. Pudge started his football career at Yale University where he was also a guard on the first ever All-American teams in 1889, 1890, and 1891. Thanks to this professional football pioneer, the American Professional Football Association was created 28 years later. Soon after its formation, it was renamed the National Football League and became increasingly popular in the midwest. The NFL Championship game in 1958 (dubbed the “Greatest Game Ever Played”) generated so much popularity that a rival league was formed. The American Football League was founded in 1959 and participated in its first official season in 1960. This ultimately led to the merging of the two leagues followed by the Super Bowl. Sometimes thought of as inferior or the red-headed-step-child in the American Football family, the AFL has achieved great success since its beginning. This season marks the 50th Anniversary of the American Football League (AFL), giving us just another reason to celebrate this great game and all it has done for us.
