Each season millions of fans head to the track to witness the most popular sport in the United States today, NASCAR racing.  Since the ending of World War II, stock-car racing has only been growing in the number of fans, drivers, and crowds.

History

When you think of stock car racing, your first thought should be Daytona Beach.  Throughout the 1920s and 30s it was the most popular place to race cars and break records.  Between 1927 and 1935, eight world records were broken and from 1905-1935 a total of 15 records were set on what was later named the Daytona Beach road course.  For a moment in time it was the Mecca for racing fans of all ages.  NASCAR may have begun in Daytona Beach, but that’s not where it ended.

In 1949, the official Cup Series of races commenced and the premiere racing division in America was created.  It was this first race that jumpstarted the official fan-base and what a fanatical one it is.  You can catch some of the craziest fans of NASCAR at races all season long at locations all over the United States.

NASCAR Today

In an interview with Raygan Swan in October 2008, Kasey Kahne said:

"…the fans that stick out are the ones in Texas and Talladega and Michigan and Bristol… those are the ones that stick out… it seems like the fans at those tracks are having more fun than anybody else."

Maybe he’s right.  There have been confirmed rumors about a few Talladega fans that like to strip down in the infield. The Fontana fans prefer to eat sushi in suites while watching the race.  At least we can say that NASCAR fans are unique fans, and dedicated doesn’t even begin to describe them.

Charlotte, North Carolina, one of the largest markets for the sport, claims that over 50% of their population is NASCAR fans.  40% of which are female.  Another astonishing thing about the sport is the number of families involved; the bonding that occurs is much different than in other sports.

In California, it is said that the fans are more laid back, much like California native and NASCAR driver, Jimmie Johnson.  The Dallas area ranks 7th on the list of largest NASCAR markets on television.  We’ve all heard the phrase, everything’s bigger in Texas; well listen to this one, on average 1 in every 4 people is a NASCAR fan!

Baseball and football tend to breed fans according to location, but NASCAR fans are different.  You have a favorite driver and you follow him at every race possible.  If you are born into a NASCAR family, you already have a mini-jumpsuit waiting with your family’s favorite drivers name on the pocket and number on the back.  If you are born into a NASCAR family, 50% of your Christmas presents will fall under the category of racing gear (jackets, t-shirts, hats with your favorite driver’s name and sponsor, or possibly tickets to the next big race).  If you are born into a NASCAR family, at least one of your birthday parties (if not all of them) will have a NASCAR theme.  It’s like the guide to growing up NASCAR.  It’s a way of life, not just a team that you watch at the local bar on weekends.

Another big difference between baseball/football fans and NASCAR fans is their ability to support competitors.  Rarely, if ever, do you see someone watching an MLB or NFL game and rooting for both teams.  But with the growing popularity of NASCAR, admiring fans have taken on an attitude not seen on other playing fields.  Some NASCAR fans have chosen to support more than one driver.  Not only are the fans of NASCAR evolving in their open-mindedness to dually support drivers, but there have been an increased number of families involved in the sport.  There seems to be a huge effort to get children more involved at races, they offer a “more kid-friendly environment,” said driver Jeff Burton.  “Last week we went out to do hospitality on Sunday morning and there was a kid’s playground area with inflatable toys and all kinds of slides… There’s been a huge effort to try to get children involved, which I think is a great thing.”

What’s not to love?  NASCAR fans everywhere are gearing up for the next big race, so don’t waste time.  Get your tickets to races all over the country right here!

I'm looking for Tiger to have a breakout performance after only a couple tournaments since knee surgery.
